Local Flavor - Cincinnati's Rhinegeist Brewing

October 22, 2018

You enter an old factory building and walk up three flights of metal stairs that have seen better days. The cramped passageway opens onto the large, high ceiling, naturally lit, taproom of Rhinegeist Brewing. Located in the Over-the-Rhine neighborhood of Cincinnati, this brewery is housed in the former location of the Christian Moerlein Brewing Company, a pre-Prohibition brewer of note.

The place is huge. The brewing facility boasts 25,000 square feet, but it's the taproom size that you will really notice. A dozen long picnic tables make up the main seating, leaving plenty of room for Baggo games and a couple of other ball tossing games you would normally find outside. Speaking of outside, there is a rooftop bar that provides a nice view of the surrounding neighborhood.

The beer is good. The selections trend toward IPA's and pale ales, although they do have a number of stouts, as well. For non-beer drinkers they make their own cider under the Cidergeist label. The taproom does not serve their own food, but a neighboring restaurant often sets up a take-away stand. Additionally, patrons can bring in their own food or have something delivered from a local restaurant.

If you can't get to Cincinnati, Rhinegeist beer is distributed across Ohio and into Indiana, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts.
