Local Flavor - Christmas at Broadway
Imagine if you put together your tackiest friend and the person who goes the most over the top decorating for Christmas. That comes the closest to describing what the Broadway Bar in Grand Rapids, Michigan looks like during the Christmas season.
The Broadway has been a fixture on the city's west side for over 100 years. It's a small neighborhood place most of the year, but that changes during the holidays. Several decades ago the bar starting going all out with Christmas decorations. Today there isn't a four inch square area in the whole place that doesn't have a Christmas decoration in it. The decorations run from the classic to the ridiculous. With so much stuff, it's great fun.
You'll get an idea of what you're in for when you walk up to the front door. Perched atop the building is a 20 foot tall inflatable Santa. Inside, the decorations start at the front door and cover the walls, ceiling, tables, bar, restrooms, and even the floors. There a Santa by the jukebox that's just a head and legs. A garland of red and green ornaments festoons the bar. Modern LED lit disco balls and icicle lights hang from the ceiling. Every table has holiday figures that sing and/or dance when squeezed. It is a sight to behold.
Even if the place wasn't decorated to within an inch of it's life, it would be worth a visit to the Broadway for one of their burgers. The burgers and other food that comes off the grill isn't fancy, but it's all good. The kind of neighborhood bar food that that goes great with a beer and flashing red and green light up elves.
